May Program Notes

Patrick Nagel (1945 – 1984) was an art world superstar whose images are immediately identifiable. They seem to symbolize a certain 1980’s lifestyle. After his untimely death in 1984, his publisher, Mirage, continued to issue posthumous serigraphs. Big Time sales resulted - $21 million from 1984 – 1990, and $2.5 mil from 1991 – 92. Such popularity naturally lured the unscrupulous scammers, and there are ‘zillions’ of counterfeit and knock-off prints out there to fool the unwary consumer & appraiser.

Todd Bingham, owner of Todd Bingham Fine Art, Escondido, was there in the beginning of the Nagel phenomenon, working for a publisher near Nagel’s publisher in Santa Monica, later for a gallery in Century City that showed Nagel’s work, and finally as a dealer & expert in Nagel prints. Todd assisted in the FBI’s 1991 investigation of the Nagel print fraud and Playboy Magazine notes him as a leading Nagel authority.
Todd will lead a presentation on how to recognize the real from the faux Nagels, discuss the current market, and provide insight into the fine print and Giclee market. Todd Bingham Fine Art also publishes limited edition fine prints, representing several exciting artists, and offers Sales Training seminars and publications to the art world. You can find out more about Todd Bingham Fine Art at www.tbfa.com. Come to the May meeting and enjoy this live event!

Interesting Fact:
Each king in a deck of playing cards represents a great king from history: Spades - King David, Hearts - Charlemagne, Clubs - Alexander the Great, Diamonds - Julius Caesar

President's Message

Greetings!

The Appraisal Profession demands extensive study, research, continuing education, and the adoption of new tools and technologies as they emerge.

Our new Chapter web site, with periodic updates (including our monthly San Diego Chapter Newsletter), as well as our election this month of the San Diego Chapter Officers for the 2004-2005 term (this time via the internet), proactively embrace new and tested technologies.

As difficult as it may be to achieve professional excellence -- maintaining excellence requires constant effort and self-discipline.

The professional appraisers who are accredited by the American Society of Appraisers not only meet these challenges, but also exceed professional expectations, by maintaining their enthusiastic quest for knowledge – thereby maintaining their professional edge, while also fulfilling ASA’s requirements for recertification every five (5) years.

ASA San Diego Chapter members also enjoy the benefits of relevant guest speaker presentations, as well as the opportunities to network and to exchange insights at our monthly Chapter meetings.

It is noteworthy that San Diego Chapter members are very busy – not only with the appraisal assignments that they take on – but also with the dedicated efforts of serving as guest speakers at the meetings of other organizations.

Need a break? Come join us at our May 18th monthly meeting! I am looking forward to seeing you there!

Best Regards,

Paul Golubovs, MBA, ASA

Georgie's Corner
Brighter Days

The San Diego economy is looking up, according to my highly informal survey of business activity as I roam around the county. Antique dealers are moving material out the door and looking for more ‘good stuff’ to sell. Karen’s Consignments, a purveyor of high-end furniture and furnishings in the secondary market, one of my favorite ‘barometers’ of the economic climate, can’t keep the store filled, things come in and go out so fast. The upscale Glorious Antiques, the Humane Society’s “thrift” shop in La Jolla, is doing brisk business. This is always a good sign! I guess that families who have bought all the ‘zillion' dollar new homes want to furnish them in style, but at a discount from the retail new cost.

The litigation and divorce appraisal arena also seems thriving. When times are hard, these two appraisal areas slow down – no one wants to spend the money on the battle. But lately everyone seems to be working on someone else’s lawsuit, so it must mean that the money is flowing again.
I hope that you all benefit as the economy brightens, bringing you good and interesting work. Now is the time to polish your competitive edge by taking some ASA education courses at Irvine, going to the ASA International Conference in Kansas City, and attending our San Diego Chapter monthly educational programs. I look forward to seeing you at the May meeting.
