This is a fun meeting to share your ideas about the coming year.

  • What type of half-day, in depth seminars will give you an educational ‘heads-up’ on current topics important to your discipline?

Give us your ideas, and we will make them a reality !

  • Got any gripes about ASA?
  • Any constructive thoughts on how to make this organization more meaningful in your professional practice?

Now is the time to share ! The Board and all interested members will have a fine lunch and discussion. EVERYONE is welcome.

The Rewards of Leadership

Georgie presenting David Bowie
with his ASA Certificate

Another year has just flown by. Since the mid 1970’s I have been looking forward to the annual San Diego ASA summer meeting! It seems impossible that so much time has passed, so many things have happened. And through it all, I am still meeting regularly with the many friends I have made over the years in our Chapter.

The San Diego ASA has meant much more to me than just the source of much of my appraisal professional education – it has been the center of much of my life of friends and social events. Thank you all for having given me 30 wonderful years!

This year we have some very talented “new faces” taking leadership in the Chapter. This has been one of my greatest goals for the Chapter. It is important that new voices, new ideas, new leadership is developed in a professional organization – in fact, developing new leadership is one of the most important obligations of leadership in an organization. If the group fails to ‘grow’ new leadership, the energy of the organization withers, meetings get stale and dull, and worst of all, the ‘leaders’ appear cliquish and exclusionary. So this new vigor and leadership in the Chapter is something that pleases me enormously, and I wish all those going up the leadership ‘steps’ the greatest of success.

I ask all of you to get involved in the Chapter. We need and welcome your ideas for programs, educational seminars, field trips, joint meetings with other organizations. You will never regret taking on a leadership position with your San Diego ASA Chapter.

I look forward to seeing you, and hearing your ideas, in the coming year.

Georgie Stillman, ASA

Past President’s Message

I want to thank all of you for helping to make this year a very successful one for the San Diego Chapter of the ASA. A special thank you to all who participated in arranging for the monthly educational meetings which was a big success, especially: Pamela Bensoussan, ASA, 2004-5 Treasurer, gave an excellent program on Report Writing to the ASA & USPAP standard; Fran Preisman, ISA presented on Fine Art Authentication, David Bowie, ASA did a fine program on Enhancing Your Business, and a big thank you to Pamela for arranging last month’s program on Expert Depositions, which was a terrific. And I want to thank all of you for your loyal attendance to your local ASA chapter, because it is your participation and suggestions for programs, and your networking with fellow appraisers, that makes the chapter a true success.

I look forward to the coming year of monthly educational meetings starting up again on the 3rd Tuesday of September. We have a hard working Board, and you can count on another great year with their leadership.

What's a SSL & why do I care?

When making purchases over the internet, you want to feel secure in giving our personal data, not to mention credit card info. SSL is the technology that allows that to happen. Look for the "https:" indicator in the website address or the padlock on the lower right corner of your browser. (Some browsers do not show the padlock image.)

Short for Secure Sockets Layer, a protocol developed by Netscape for transmitting private documents via the Internet, SSL works by using a public key to encrypt data that's transferred over the SSL connection. Used by most commerce servers on the World Wide Web, this high-level security protocol protects the confidentiality and security of data while it is being transmitted through the internet.

The end of Spyware ?

Two bills focusing on spyware overwhelmingly passed the U.S. House of Representatives recently, including one that requires many software programs collecting personal information to get permission before doing so.

The Securely Protect Yourself Against Cyber Trespass Act, or Spy Act, also would outlaw the act of taking over a computer in order to send unauthorized information or code, and diverting a Web browser without the permission of the computer owner. The bill, which passed the House by a vote of 393-4, prohibits Web advertising that computer users cannot close "without undue effort" or without shutting down the computer, and it prohibits collecting personal information through keystroke logging.

A second bill, the Internet Spyware Prevention Act, or I-Spy Act, sets jail terms of up to five years for a person who uses spyware to access a computer without authorization and uses the computer to commit another federal crime. The I-Spy Act also would allow a jail term of up to two years for a person who uses spyware to obtain someone else's personal information or to defeat security protections on a computer with the intent of defrauding or injuring the computer owner.
