At this unique workshop we will see how a master craftsman creates and restores fine furniture using old world techniques, and learn about the art of marquetry. Patrick Edwards will also discuss how he works as a partner with appraisers in the field assisting with authentication, condition reports, and repair estimates.
Located in North Park, Antique Refinishers Inc. has done professional restoration and conservation of pre-industrial American and European furniture since 1969. After owner Patrick Edwards studied 18th Century French marquetry, cabinetmaking and finishing at Ecole Boulle in Paris, he established The American School of French Marquetry in 2000 at the same location. Focusing on pre-industrial furniture for over 30 years, he also began producing contemporary designs about 5 years ago.

Patrick Edwards is a teacher, author, furniture conservator and furniture maker. He has a Bachelors degree from UCSD with a major in Nuclear Physics and a minor in History. He has been featured in several PBS television documentaries, Artist-At-Work programs at the Getty Museum in Los Angeles, and the book “The Custom Furniture Source Book: A Guide to 125 Craftsmen” by Kerry Pierce.
Following the tour we will walk a couple of blocks to the restaurant for dinner. Hawthorn’s was opened earlier this year by the owners of the long running establishment Fifth & Hawthorn. The restaurant is located in the historic North Park Theatre, originally built in 1928 and recently renovated. The original décor has been restored wherever possible, creating the elegant atmosphere of a movie palace from a bygone era.
