Valuable Stamps

Capsules of History

Presented by Winand Hess, APS, owner of Collectors Connection of California

Every family has one – a stamp collection started by the grandparent or Uncle. Every collection has potential for buried treasure in its pages – some rare and valuable item. But there are pages, zillions of pages, to go through to find it.

This presentation will help you determine how to evaluate the collection, what to do, and where to go to find expert, honest help in determining the value of stamps and postal covers.

Winard Hess

Winand Hess caught the stamp collecting ‘bug’ from his father in Germany. After coming to the USA in 1971 and pursuing his career in molecular biology, he devoted his time to his passion for the philately (stamp collecting) field by exhibiting and selling internationally, plus judging/vetting stamp exhibitions.

The following are a few of Winand's many contributions to the philately field.

Recovery in the Tech Market

Values Rise Dramatically for Refurbished IT Equipment

Winslow reports to the SD ASA Chapter from his travels on appraisal assignment in Austin. With the upturn in the tech markets, the cost of used/refurbished jumped skyward. The demand for reliable and accurate appraisal values has increased along with the recovery.

During the downturn, refurbishers purchased equipment at auction for their inventory, not knowing when, but believing a turn around would happen. During the tough times that lingered into the early part of this millennium, some refurbishers didn’t make it. Those that did are now experiencing an exciting surge in values for their goods as the tech field takes off again.

These photographs show a recent inspection Winslow conducted of a Novellus Chemical Vapor Deposition tool used for producing microchips. During the downturn, this unit would be valued at approximately $250,000 – today, a fully refurbished unit sold for as much as a $1 million.

Life is Marked by Seasons

Seasons of a yearly cycle, with our Spring of birth and Summer of development and blooms, our Autumn of harvest and Winter of rest and preparation for new growth. And our seasons of life’s journey. My mother’s final earthly season is over now, but all the love and wisdom, laughter and lessons from her long and joyous life will stay with me forever. I can only hope that I give back to others, on their life journey, some of what she gave to me, and thus honor her life and legacy.

My mother saw amazing things in her life – she watched Lindbergh’s parade down 5th Avenue, Marlon Brando in A Street Car Named Desire from the 3rd row center in a Broadway theatre, heard Fats Domino at The Cotton Club, knew Barry Goldwater, Jack Kennedy & met Paul Newman, drove Lucille Ball around Phoenix in a convertible.

What a time my mom had! I wish you had known her. She certainly heard all about you guys! As many of you know, my Mom lived with me for the last 8 ½ years, and I am so lucky to have had those years, as an adult, with my Mommy. All I can say is, visit or call your parents, give them a kiss and a hug, and save up your memories to share with your children.

We, as appraisers, are caught up in determining the worth of something in terms of money. I stop sometimes and remember “its only money, stupid!” Other qualities that give us value, life and joy, are much more important.

Be well, be happy, Georgie
