We all want to appear more professional while at the same time assuring that our appraisal efforts are rewarded. Yet many of us still do not have contracts for the work we do. Contracts not only ensure our work will be paid but they provide proof that we were engaged in an appraisal assignment.
Contracts are a great way to protect yourself and inform your clients of your company policies. A Letter of Engagement or Client Contract is an essential business tool. It sets out exactly what you have agreed to provide for your client (scope of work), and the terms under which you have agreed to perform your work. For example, a contract might outline what is included in your fees, when you are to be paid, and how a disagreement or dispute will be handled. Without a legally sound client contract you could have trouble getting paid.
In addition to contracts we will discuss letters of declaration and appraisal estimates. Have you been asked by a client to offer proof of your expertise or to provide estimates of what an appraisal will cost? At this meeting we will also discuss variations on the general contract to satisfy other client requests prior to getting the appraisal.
If you don’t have these documents or haven’t updated them recently, come to the meeting this month with a sample of your documents to share with others. We will all learn from this experience, and take away something that will improve the business side of our appraisal practice. Clients, attorneys and insurance companies will be impressed with your professional conduct.
In addition to our content this month we will highlight current events and topics happening in San Diego with a special case study on Fair Market Values versus Actual Cash Value for Insurance Claim Litigation.

We had another fabulous meeting in March and I was delighted to see so many of you there. Our joint meeting with the Forensic Consultants Association provided us valuable information on the discovery of electronic information and how to protect ourselves and our data. This month promises to be another informative meeting on updating our contracts and seeing how our fellow appraisers set up their contracts and engage with clients. I look forward to a meeting of open sharing and innovative ideas to grow our businesses.
It is that time of the year again when a new slate of officers will be considered for the leadership of our chapter. We have received interest in new members for our board but we still need your help. Please consider running for office and supporting the chapter. We will open the floor for further nominations at the meeting this month but feel free to contact me prior to the meeting as well. We are striving to make SD ASA a better place to help grow our businesses and learn new information. Remember you do not need to be an accredited member to participate on the chapter board. If you are a candidate or considering candidacy we welcome your participation. Remember that participating on the chapter board not only benefits the chapter but it will help your business as well. Some of the benefits to being an officer includes: increased visibility in the chapter, resume builder, more prestige/qualifications in expert witness testimony and much more. Please contact Garrett Goldfield to inquire about these positions. Nominations will be accepted until April 21st.
The officer positions are:
New this year, we are providing announcements, updates, and current events during the first half hour of our meetings. Please let me know each month if there are current events that you think members of our chapter would be interested in. Whether it is discipline specific or general information, we want to know the news!
There are multiple initiatives that we are trying to implement this year but we cannot accomplish it without your help. One area we hope you will contribute to is writing articles for our website. We want to keep the website fresh and useful for all of our members and we would love to include your ideas and expertise. Could you write a brief article for us to post on our website? Do you have appraisal news or information that would be valuable to our members? Why not write it up and increase your visibility within our chapter and to your clients. Take a look and see what others have written if you are not sure where to begin: www.sandiegoappraisers.org. We will not ask you for more time than you can spare as we try to make this chapter a resource that is valuable to you and your business. Please contact Garrett Goldfield for more information.
Thank you,
Garrett Goldfield
