SPEAKERS
Jim Sevel is the owner of San Diego Computer Forensics LLC and a computer forensics expert. He has approximately twenty-nine (29) years of federal law enforcement experience and twelve years as a computer forensics examiner. Jim was one of the founding members of the San Diego Regional Computer Forensics Laboratory (run by the FBI), the nation’s first (and foremost) regional computer forensic laboratory. He retired in 2006 as the Supervisor of the San Diego Computer Forensics and Cyber Investigations Group for the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), previously the U.S. Customs Service. In 2008, Jim was given "the offer he couldn’t refuse" and hired back by ICE as a full-time Computer Forensics Agent (CFA).
In addition to performing computer forensic analysis and providing courtroom testimony, Jim has been responsible for the supervision and training of a group of Computer Forensics Agents and Cyber Investigators. The Agents provided computer forensic support to approximately 300 agents in four separate offices in Southern California. They supported investigations involving commercial fraud, narcotics smuggling, money laundering, child pornography, counterfeit document labs, covert and overt cyber investigations and the illegal trading of weapons and munitions.
Jim’s prior law enforcement experience involved international marine and airborne narcotics interdiction, narcotics and major fraud investigations, and work with various multi-agency task-forces in the San Diego area.

So far this year is off to a great start. The attendance at our monthly meetings is up and our new venue is generating rave reviews! Thank you all for your help in improving our chapter. As always we are looking for new content and topics that our members will find interesting. Please forward me any ideas you might have or contacts for a future meeting.
It is that time of the year again when a new slate of officers will be considered for the leadership of our chapter. We have made large strides this year and we are looking for energetic new leaders to keep improving our chapter. We are striving to make SD ASA a better place to help grow our businesses and learn new information. Please consider volunteering for a leadership position or nominate someone for a role. Remember you do not need to be an accredited member to participate on the chapter board. If you are a candidate or considering candidacy we welcome your participation. The officer positions are:
Remember that participating on the chapter board not only benefits the chapter but it will help your business as well. Some of the benefits to being an officer include: increased visibility in the chapter, resume builder, more prestige/qualifications in expert witness testimony and so much more. Please contact Garrett Goldfield to inquire about these positions and their responsibilities and to throw your political hat in the ring. Nominations will be accepted until April 21st.
We have been altering our meeting format to better use the time we have allotted to us each month. New this year, we are providing announcements, updates, and current events during the first half hour of our meetings. Please let me know each month if there are current events that you think members of our chapter would be interested in. Whether it is discipline specific or general information, we want to know the news!

Our last meeting brought Susan Almon-Pesch in to give us a dynamic presentation on marketing your business. This presentation covered aspects of growing your appraisal firm through the identification of your best referral partners and to utilizing social networking to increase the visibility of your company.
She spoke on how to use educational events to create buzz; ways to post your website on local directories; keys to compelling website copywriting; which CRM (client relationship management) program is right for you. We had a lengthy conversation on what Social Networking sites are important including: LinkedIn, FaceBook and Twitter. Sue also discussed targeted networking opportunities as a way to get better customers for your business.
Sue has graciously offered to make her presentation slides available if you would like them. To receive a copy of her presentation slides email her at: info@market4profit.com
In January John Brenan spoke to us about the updated 2010 USPAP. If you could not make the presentation the slides are currently posted on our website and we have a few extra copies of his handouts. Contact Garrett Goldfield to get a copy of the handouts.
There are multiple initiatives that we are trying to implement this year but we cannot accomplish it without your help. One area we hope you will contribute to is writing articles for our website. We want to keep the website fresh and useful for all of our members and we would love to include your ideas and expertise. Could you write a brief article for us to post on our website? Do you have appraisal news or information that would be valuable to our members? Why not write it up and increase your visibility within our chapter and to your clients. Take a look and see what others have written if you are not sure where to begin: http://www.sandiegoappraisers.org/article-results.php. We will not ask you for more time than you can spare as we try to make this chapter a resource that is valuable to you and your business. Please contact Garrett Goldfield for more information.
